With the new website legislation now in effect, it's a good time to make sure your usage policies are stated clearly on your website.
Website usage policies are beneficial because they alert users of your copyright policy, how they're allowed to use your site and how you would use any personal information they submit to you.
Your website usage policies should include:
- Your privacy policy - this states how you collect information on users when they visit your site (through such things as cookies, competition entries or registration information), how you may use this information and how the information is keep secure. - Website usage policy - this is an agreement that your users enter into with you when they use your website. They agree to such things as: the information on the site is for general use and is subject to change without notice, that they use it at their own risk and that the information on the site is copyrighted. - Copyright notice and policy - by displaying a copyright notice on all of your pages, you remind users that the content on your website is owned by you. For example: your copyright policy may inform users how they can use your material off of the website - allowing extracts to be taken for personal use or allowing distribution of content if the source is credited.
