Keep tabs on your website

Posted 21 August 2007 at 8:48AM by Simon Dickson in Managing your website

Zoho is a company making significant waves in the 'web 2.0' world: they specialise in online versions of common office programs, and rarely does a month go by without something new emerging from their labs. You name it, they've got it: word processor, spreadsheet, presentation package, project management tool, CRM system, wiki platform, email server, and so on. Influential blog TechCrunch rates them as 'the best office suite on the web, bar none.'

But one of their services, which receives virtually no attention, could be a godsend for anyone reliant on a website to drive or promote their business. Site24x7 couldn't be more straightforward: every so often, it hits your website to ensure it's still working OK, and logs the results. If it doesn't respond, or if it takes longer than you'd like, Site24x7 will send you an alert message via email, RSS feed or text message.

The basic service is free; you can track two websites, checking them once an hour, and to Zoho's infinite credit, the signup process couldn't be quicker. You'll have to reach for your credit card to monitor more websites, or if you want to check as regularly as every five minutes. But with the dollar exchange rate so favourable just now, you're talking less than £2 per month per website.

Very clever indeed! Now if only someone could develop something similar for missing, or unidentifiable email...now THAT would be useful!
