Google ranking: the experts' best guesses

Posted 17 May 2007 at 8:52AM by Simon Dickson in Managing your website

Over the last few weeks we've talked a bit about search engine optimisation, and some of the generally accepted methods to make your website rank higher for the keywords you care about.

If it's a subject close to your heart, you'll be very interested in this analysis by several dozen experts in the field, attempting to reach a consensus on which factors are most important in Google's calculation. Although they only list a fraction of the 'estimated 200+ elements' which make up that calculation, they estimate that their conclusions cover '90-95% of the knowledge required'.

It's well worth a few minutes of any web manager's time to review the points made by the experts against each topic. But as an illustration of the complexity of the subject, a number of the elements are marked as 'highly disputed'. It's certainly an interesting read, and you won't find a better summary by more qualified people (outside Google itself).

Thanks for pointing this out - always important to hear what the "industry gurus" have to say.
