Would you recommend your profession to anyone in your family?

Posted 14 July 2008 at 9:09AM by Hannah Gilchrist in Light relief

The research, conducted by HR consultancy Hudson found that many would face better career opportunities and higher pay elsewhere, but surely this can be said of most jobs which aren't your own.

This 'grass is always greener' philosophy can't just be confined to the realms of HR. Usually the reason you're deterred from a profession is because it's hard work, but what if you like hard work?

If you really want to do something you're likely do it no matter what the conditions. Flexible working schemes are a great incentive, but can they really make you change your mind about your career choice?

The answer for me is NO, but I would not attempt to stop them doing so. Times change and what was a good profession 20 years ago is not necessarily good today. Even within families everyone has slightly different skills and abilities.

I commenced my life as an Engineering Apprentice to Design Engineer, to Engineering Company Managing Director, to University Senior Lecturer and when I retired I turned to Internet Trading which I enjoy. You must adapt to the times and use the training / skills obtained over the years to best advantage. It is important that you have a job that you enjoy. If you take out 8 hours sleeping a day, a large proportion of your life is spent working - So enjoy it.

The life of a superstar wrestler is a good one. I would recommend it to any seven foot colossusses. (colossi?) I get free sandwiches everywhere I go, and you know what they say - chicks dig it Big!
