Unemployment worries?

Posted 18 January 2008 at 8:08AM by Hannah Gilchrist in Light relief

After figures revealed that unemployment fell by 13,000 between September and November 2007 to 1.65 million, the question on everyone's lips is how does that affect my business? The truth is, business recruitment is about to get much harder.

Falling unemployment may be great news for the government but with businesses looking to recruit new staff the talent pool is considerably smaller. Not only does this mean finding the right employees for the job takes longer, but it can also mean it's more costly too.

With UK unemployment at it's lowest for 22 years and the credit crunch beginning to take effect where will that leave your pay rate and your levels of employment? Does this statistic make you more likely to hold onto your staff for fear of finding new ones?

The question is what kind of industries are the major employers at the moment? Employment levels might be lower than in previous years, but I think that's because of the rise of non-professional jobs more that anything else.

Seems like professionals are having a harder time. Take not having enough spaces for recently gradauted doctors to complete their housemanship for example. I believe there are still lots of unemployed professionals seeking work and not because they are not prepared to, but because competition is fierce and for every job opening, there are many potential candidates that could all fill the role perfectly.
