The Apprentice: 'get behind it and push it'

Posted 31 May 2007 at 8:22AM by Simon Dickson in Light relief

If ever you needed a reason to watch The Apprentice on a Wednesday night... at least it meant you couldn't watch the Big Brother opening night. But if - for whatever reason - you're planning to watch Sir Alan and the gang later in the week, look away now.

It was another cracking episode: the six remaining contestants were sent to the Peterborough home of Ideal World TV to select some products from the warehouse, then try to sell them live on-air. The whole way through, the focus was on Simon, and it was no surprise to learn that his team had lost. It was as tense a boardroom scene as we've had the whole series: any one of the three could have gone, and they all knew it. For a moment, even Tre thought he was in trouble.

Before we go any further, can I get one thing off my chest? I told you so. If you'll allow me to copy and paste the words I wrote here exactly seven days ago: 'I'm going to put my money where my mouth is: next week, Naomi will go.' Admit it, right until the end, you thought it was going to be Simon - didn't you? Because I certainly did.

Simon won't be able to live down the 'screwing in the trampoline legs' camera angles, or freezing in the director's chair. But then again, he did come out with the funniest line of the entire evening: facing a barrage of complaints over his choice of a wheelchair among the products they had to sell, he told his team-mates to 'get behind it and really push it.' For that alone, I can forgive him everything he got wrong this week.

In fact, I'm not sure it's fair to condemn anyone for their performance this week alone. Throwing the poor darlings in front of a live TV audience for half an hour seemed cruel, unwatchable at times... although Lohit and Katie were naturals, as the extra footage on the BBC site demonstrates. But it told us virtually nothing about how they would run a project in an office at Amstrad HQ. So I'm sticking with Kristina to win it. She won't make a great TV host, but she oozed confidence throughout, particularly in the studio 'gallery'.

Next week will be an absolute cracker. The dead wood has all been discarded, and we're down to the serious prospects. Only two will make it through next week, and it could conceivably be any two. And is there a better pairing for the Final Showdown than Kristina versus Katie?

But surely Sir Alan won't make that mistake again. It will be Kristina vs Simon.

One thought - what would he do if he honestly thought, as everyone I watch it with does, that none of them are fit to be his apprentice? Could he fire them all? Now THERE would be an ending...

Simon should have gone, he was by far the worse. He couldnt produce, he couldn't present and he couldn't lead the team. He lost all his confidence and was hopeless, by far the worse - but for some reason Sir Alan likes him. He was just very lucky that 2 wheelchairs were sold.
He couldn't even defend himself in the cafe scene and looked then like he had given up. He acts like he wants to go now and doesn't really want the job.
Kristina wont win, remember what he says "I don't like liars, and I don't like cheats" I'm afraid she does both sometimes and will twist the truth to get a sale - she will get found out if she hasn't been already!
Katie just wants some media coverage, and no doubt will find herself with some kind of spin off once the show has finished. She probably won't come over in a good light in the interview round.
I think the final will be between Lohit and Tre, but im not really sure any of the contenders are really worth £100k a year. If I were him I would have two of them and pay them each £50K! Im sure they would take it.

I like your idea Kim, but why not take it a stage further and take all four of them for £25k each. That way at least three of them would be highly overpaid for their ability.
