Compassionate capitalism - is it right?

Posted 1 April 2008 at 2:10PM by Hannah Gilchrist in Light relief

What happens when the orders come that you have to fire someone? Do you get pangs of guilt, a rush of depression or just carry on with your day regardless? Call it what you like, but some employers are trying to brighten darker clouds by opting to find work for their newly axed employees.

Compassionate capitalism, as it is now named, could soon be the best way to thank your redundant employees. One US manager decided that his guilt was too great and placed a 'for hire' advert on Craigslist to help tout his ex-developers skills just one day after being forced to axe them.

But is this type of compassion right? Should it be your responsibility to help out your redundant employees, or should their pay-out be enough? When it comes to cutting the rope calling in the favours can put you in a good light.

The only thing is if you read the 'amazing' descriptions this manager posted, I'm not sure you'd be so thrilled.

Sounds like "spoonfeeding" to me.
Maybe the good Karma will come back and return the favour to this US manager.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with a little compassion - but what if the new recipient of your redundant employee/s sues you for misrepresentation?

I was in just such a position in 2005. Most of my employees had worked for me in excess of 10 years. I got them all jobs with my old customers, which made me feel good about myself and pleased both the employees and the old customers. Win win I thought
