Say hello to the 99 pound laptop

Posted 6 March 2008 at 8:43AM by Ian Betteridge in IT systems and support

If you've just spent £1200 on a portable computer for reading email and writing office documents, you might want to avert your eyes: UK-based PC maker Elonex is poised to bring out a laptop capable of all that for the bargain price of £99.

The Elonex ONE, as the machine is called, follows in the footsteps of the Asus eeePC as a tiny machine based on the free Linux operating system, running standard free applications like Firefox and OpenOffice. It has wireless networking, so you can connect from any wireless hot spot to check your email, and a seven inch screen which is actually detachable from the keyboard.

At present, the ONE is solely for education - so you'll have to pretend to be rather young if you want to get your hands on one. But, like the Asus eeePC, it proves that portable technology doesn't have to be expensive, and that if your needs are basic you don't need to spend lots of money.

Dont suppose you have any news about a release date?
Oh and ummm. Although not relating to this subject, I recently removed the 2007 version of Norton Internet Security and My laptop is as good as new. Removed it from my desktop as well (both running Windows NT, XP) and they now back to the speeds I had originally. Cant say Im too impressed with Norton:) Made my 10mgb BB operate at Dialup speeds.

Carl is spot on regarding Norton. I had to strip it from a brand new laptop and replace it to get up to speed.
