PC tracking - worth considering?

Posted 25 April 2008 at 8:21AM by Hannah Gilchrist in IT systems and support

No matter how great your insurance policies and business continuity plans are one day the inevitable will happen and someone will pocket one of your precious PCs.

But panic not. It seems laptops are now quite capable of finding their way back to you all by themselves. Thanks to the latest tracking technology, thousands of stolen machines have been found as far a field as Argentina. The device, embedded in the computer's motherboard, is activated when the machine is connected to the net and exposes its IP address and its location.

But while this technology is all very well and good, will it actually "devalue the attractiveness of computer theft", as claimed by Alan McInnes general manager with the Association of Chief Police Officers crime prevention initiatives? Or is it just another way to make money out of fearful businesses?

Hmm.. OK. What about privacy issue? then someone can find where I am located in this small world. i think which is not good. everyone have to be careful on their belongings. if we depend on technology for everything then someday this world will be in miserable position, but thats my opinion

Interesting I had a call from the police the other day who reported that they had found one of our machines in a second hand shop that we had sold to one of our customers. It does work.

This has been standard for a lot of companies - its not just laptops but PC's too -

It's nothing new.

Just rip out everything and use the parts and not the motherboard
