New security advice for small companies

Research by Get Safe Online, the national campaigning body backed by the government and BT (among many others), reveals that nearly half the UK's small businesses have been victims of 'cyber crime'. And although 60% of those surveyed said their businesses would grind to a halt if their IT system failed, just 5% had dedicated IT support, either in-house or outsourced; and just 32% considered themselves to be fully up-to-date with current PC/internet security issues.
'As cyber crime becomes more sophisticated, basic measures (such as anti-virus) aren't enough on their own,' according to Get Safe Online managing director Tony Neate. 'Businesses also must look at access control, data encryption and secure password practices, as well as looking at other measures such as staff training. But, it's also important to remember that by taking a few simple precautions, online risks needn't overshadow the huge benefits that the internet brings to UK businesses.'
The campaign has produced a leaflet aimed specially at small and micro-businesses (PDF download) which offers fairly superficial advice on the subject; you're much better looking at the campaign website, where the information is more detailed whilst still being easy to follow.
