Counting the cost of a stolen laptop

Laptop theft is on the rise, according to research by IT news website silicon.com. They asked the UK's police forces how many laptops had been reported stolen, excluding thefts from homes or offices - and discovered an average year-on-year increase of 6%. In some areas, the rise was as much as 30 or 40 per cent; however, some areas also reported equally significant declines.
Fridays, it turns out, are the days most likely to see a laptop stolen. Presumably this would be the larger number of people taking work home for the weekend than on other weekdays; or, perhaps ironically, people taking their precious PC home for safe-keeping? And as silicon.com points out, with laptop prices having come down markedly in the last couple of years, it's probably the theft of the data which will cost the company, more so than the hardware itself.
