Too many suppliers, not enough time?

In my previous life with BT I spent a lot of time meeting businesses and discussing the issues that really kept them awake at night. Consistent among all of them, large and small, was the amount of time spent dealing with suppliers. I was always amazed at the number even the smallest of businesses had and how much time was spent managing them.
According to research recently carried out for BT businesses spend more than a day per year with each supplier. Not surprisingly, half of the businesses surveyed wanted to reduce the number of suppliers, which backs up my experience.
