A budget for business

Posted 12 March 2008 at 8:00AM by Ian Betteridge in Investment and finance

It's budget day - one of the most important days in the business year. And, as in every budget, there are going to be winners and losers as the government attempts to balance all the competing needs of the nation.

The strongest rumours suggest that the Chancellor will bow to the inevitable and cut the government's forecasts for growth. This is no real surprise: while the economy doesn't look like it's actually going to move into recession, the squeeze on credit and increased price of oil isn't going to do growth any favours.

Whatever the forecasts, though, the government will need to be very careful that its measures do not increase the burden on one of the main engines of the economy - the country's legion of small businesses.

With an economy that is slowing, it is more important than ever that small companies - and especially new start ups - are supported as far as possible. The tiny company of today can become the major employer of tomorrow - and benefit the whole country.

I look forward to the new budget. It will present a beter case of the "recession" that everyone was trying to scare monger the nation with.
Obviously everyone will jump to point out the flaws in this budget and so to it will attract the mob joining the bandwagon of dount and speculation, but I hope we all look at the long term benefits that a conservative budget may present. No one is unhappy if they saved money throughout the year and then have a little bit at the end to splash out, I think the new budget will be cautious to make sure that there is something left to help the economy rejuvinate itself if something bigger presents itself. The economy slowing down was inevitable.
