Viruses everywhere

I had to renew my anti-virus protection the other day, prompting me to have a quick look at what it protects me from. Searching on Google I found lots of websites givng information on viruses and here is a small selection.
Trend Micro have a very smart Virus Map showing which viruses are causing problems in different parts of the world. They also have a list of current viruses, hoaxes and scams.
McAfee's HackerWatch also has global and regional maps showing the volume of virus targets and attacks. The European map shows the high density of attacks in the UK compared to the rest of Europe.
Symantec lists known threats, risks and vulnerabilities. They describe vulnerabilities as flaws in computer software that can be a weakness in IT security.
These sites show that there are always viruses of varying severity floating about, but as long as you have up-to-date anti-virus protection you should be okay.

Oooh, just checked Symantec.
Mac OS does have some new potential issues, especially for the new Intel based systems... If you have Mac OS machines it's well worth following their advice:
"Symantec advises Apple Safari users to turn off the “Open ‘safe’ files after downloading” feature in the Web browser software."
There's a similar vulnerability in iChat:
"Symantec recommends that users of Macintosh OS X (version 10.4) ensure that iChat will request permission before transferring a file and not to accept incoming files."
