Protecting your laptop

Posted 28 December 2006 at 1:00AM by Alexa Williamson in Internet security

Christmas and New Year is an easy time to drop your guard and lose your laptop. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to prevent it - or your data - going astray.

Protecting your laptop

  • Carry your laptop in a non-descript bag such as a large backpack. Thieves know what a classic laptop bag looks like.
  • Lock it up. If you don't have a safe, buy a sturdy lock and cable.
  • Add an alarm! With the Targus Defcon 1 Universal + Alarm, for example, a 110-decibel alarm will sound if someone tries to steal your laptop case or cuts the security cable that comes with it.
  • Not everyone is notebook savvy so feel free to instruct anyone handling it - including airport security staff!
  • Hide your laptop when you leave it at home or in an hotel room. Thieves will come back to steal anything on display.
  • Install track and trace software on your laptop. This often tied to a subscription service and will pass the location of your laptop if it connects to the Internet after being stolen.

Protecting your laptop data

  • Only put files you need on your laptop. Company secrets are best left at the office.
  • Back up your data. BT PC Backup automatically and remotely backs up your PC data whenever you connect to the Internet - no matter where you are.
  • Encrypt your data so no one else can read it.
  • Put a system password on your laptop so it's password protected.
  • If your laptop's hard drive is easy to remove, store it elsewhere when your laptop's not in use.
