Protect yourself when using search engines

Yesterday's post on the new BT Internet Security Pack described some of the programs you can use to protect your computer from Internet threats. Being mindful when you use websites, particularly search engines, is equally important.
Search engines can't guarantee the sites they return are free from spyware, viruses and other hazards. Research done by McAfee has found that four to six percent of all search results include websites carrying online threats. They also found that search results for 'screensavers' and 'free ringtones' are particularly laden with malware.
To minimise the risk:
- Ensure your computer is adequately protected with software like BT Internet Security Pack.
- Remember that few search engines consider the quality or safety of the sites they index. A site at the top of your results isn't necessarily safe.
- If a site seems illegitimate, it probably is.
- Never click through on pop-up windows, even if they have a cancel button. It's best to close them using the cross in the top corner. Alternatively, right-click with your mouse and select 'Close window'.
- Avoid downloading material from unfamiliar sites.
- Make sure your anti-virus and anti-spyware software is always "on" when surfing the web.
- Specifically scan all your downloads before installing them.
