Reduce and recycle waste to save money

The WEEE waste laws, which require computer retailers to take away your old equipment after a new purchase, come into full effect in July. With this in mind, it's a good time to think about how you can reduce/recycle waste and conserve resources.
The Environmental Information Exchange estimates that better waste management policies can save a business costs equalling 1% of turnover.
Waste management:
These are defined by the Environment Information Exchange as:- Minimise: reduce what you use so you produce less waste
- Recover: Re-use or recycle waste, either within your business or through various schemes
- Disposal: How you get rid of waste can have an impact on the cost and environmental impact
Schemes to re-use waste from businesses include:
- The Furniture Re-use Network - an umbrella scheme for 300 organisations nationwide that take unwanted furniture and give it to the needy.
- Donate-a-PC - a matching service for individuals and organisations to donate un-needed hardware (computers, printers, etc) to UK charities, not-for-profit organisations and educational establishments.
- Junkk.com - a new service where anyone can post tips on how to re-use any item of waste and businesses can sign-up for readers to collect items from them.
Besides reducing and recycling waste, teleworking is good way of minimising petrol consumption and keeping the air clean. A survey done by Company Car Driver.com said that 40% of those driving to work would prefer to work from home. A recent post I wrote - the last time snow delayed travel to London - describes teleworking's benefits and how we can help you set it up.
