Product review: Apple's new iPhone and similar devices
Posted 16 February 2007 at 9:31AM by Alexa Williamson in Hints and tips
My gadgetry craze from Wednesday continues and today I feel the need to talk about what is probably the most exciting upcoming gadget of the year - Apple's iPhone.
I first learned about how nifty the iPhone will be when my boyfriend said he wanted it because it "did everything" and would "fit in my back pocket".
So what does his simply put praise mean?
The iPhone will replace the Crackberry as the current hand-held 'must have' - for both leisure and business purposes - because it:
- is only 3.5 inches (8.9cm) wide but with a large multi-touch display you can control everything with just your fingers
- lets you synchronise all your iTunes and contact information from your computer or Internet service with it
- comes with a rich HTML email client and Safari web browser
- allows you to listen to your voicemail messages in whatever order you want
- includes Google maps and widgets (small applications) like real-time stock and weather reports
- has sensors that: adjust a picture from portrait to landscape view when you turn it on its side, adjusts screen brightness to appropriate level for your surroundings, when it's near your ear it turns off the display to save power
- has WiFi and Bluetooth
- has storage of 4GB or 8GB and weighs only 4.8 ounces (135g)
The following similar devices bow down to the iPhone, but are fun to play with and will tide you over till it arrives:
- HP iPAQ hw6915 - you can work online, listen to your music, take photos and get GPS navigation, but it's chunkier than the iPhone (given 5-stars by Dabs.com customers)
- Nokia 770 Internet Tablet - includes full Internet capability, ability to stream files and play your favourite videos and music (given 5-stars by Dabs.com customers)
- Palm Treo 750 Smartphone - get all of the functions you need (internet, music and shoot photos) on a Microsoft 5.0 operating system
