Evernote: invaluable free tool for taking notes online

If you spend a lot of time trawling the web for information, and who doesn't these days?, you'll probably fall in love with EverNote.
It's a free Windows tool which wants to be the store for all the notes you take as you use your PC. It hides in the corner of the screen until it's needed; to create a new note, you just start typing. (Or drawing - it can handle that too.) Notes save themselves automatically, and are immediately searchable.
Where I find it invaluable is inside my web browser. Once installed, you'll see an EverNote button at the top of Internet Explorer; there's also a downloadable extension for Firefox. If you see something on a web page which you want to take note of, you just highlight the portion of the page you want, and press the EverNote button. EverNote automatically creates a new note, and pastes the information into it. So now, any time I see something on the web I know I'll want later, a single click sticks it in EverNote, for me to retrieve as and when.
EverNote is one of those rare programs which can completely change the way you use your computer. And it's remarkable to have so much additional functionality - including the ability to print, email, encrypt and export your notes - in a free tool... although to be honest, having used it for ages, I've never really needed all that.
Start by downloading the free version of EverNote 1.5, and prepare to be impressed. There's even more functionality available in EverNote Plus, and if you're brave, you can download an early copy of version 2.0 - but be warned, it's a 'beta' version, meaning it's not the finished product, and may let you down.
