Deadline this Thursday for WEEE registration

If your business is in electronics or electrical equipment, you have until this Thursday to join a producer compliance scheme that will register your business with the appropriate UK environmental regulator.
Originally published more than four years ago, the European directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) aims to reduce landfill, encourage recycling and promote the safe disposal of discarded kit. From 1 July 2007, all producers and retailers are responsible for taking back and recovering or disposing of waste electrical and electronic equipment from businesses and householders.
After a couple of years' delay, and following additional public consultation, the rules are now coming into force in the UK, with a number of milestones ahead of full implementation. If you manufacture, import or re-brand electrical and electronic equipment, you must apply to join a Producer Compliance Scheme that has been approved by one of the environment agencies by Thursday 15 March. The Environment Agency warns that there is no minimum company size.
The Netregs website on environmental legislation is probably the best starting point for information on WEEE. The Environment Agency's own site has more, including the latest list of approved schemes. Businesses in Scotland should look to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency; in Northern Ireland, it's the Environment and Heritage Service.
