Are you paying too much for 'budget' travel

Posted 9 January 2008 at 10:07AM by Hannah Gilchrist in Hints and tips

After new research highlighted that budget airlines are actually failing to advertise hidden costs, should businesses be returning to the larger airlines for the best deals?

A Which? survey found that firms are charging as much as £32 in hidden extra ticket costs for items such as luggage and use of credit cards, both of which are sometimes unavoidable for small business travel.

So are you really getting the best deal? If you book with a domestic airline most costs are included, drinks, luggage, meal, seat reservation and best of all, check-in. Admittedly these 'extras' do cost money, but in the end is it worth paying them upfront for the knowledge that dinner and leg-room is included?

i think all budgey holidays are a con!!!!!
Always advertised at super low prices but you find when they are available because i never have yet....
Then you hear stories of people finding them but they tell you things like transfer bus dropped us off no where near our hotel,
we had to get a taxi and did not know where we were... money saving i think not!!!! will stick to high street travel agents thank you

Sorry, but I have nothing but praise for the Budget Airlines.
I have flown to Pisa (Italy) for as little as £1.98 return.
Addmittadly there was no food but every thing else was fine. If you fly and don't want the frills GO BUDGET.

In my experience, all the costs mentioned are clearly stated on the Airlines websites, so they are hardly "hidden". I also notice that, once again, the worst offender is Ryanair - maybe if people "voted with their feet" and didn't use them they would get the message?

If the shoe fits wear it but I would always have to come back to say that quality costs:)
People should be aware of their consumer rights and if they are being billed with hidden charges then they should highlight it to the provider first, and if no luck there the indusrty regulator, who are always ready to clamp down on offenders.

Some of the worst ones give you a low price online, but it's only once you get to the checkout stage that the other costs are added. I do think that they should be made to indicate the total cost at the start of any booking procedure.
