Why have I received an email from BT asking for my password?

Posted 21 September 2007 at 3:06PM by Martin Faux in Email and communications

In case you weren't aware, BT never sends emails to customers in which it asks for sensitive information.

Should you receive an email that looks like it has been sent by us, asking for your password or account details then the email is likely to be what is know in the industry as a "phishing" scam.

Should you receive such an email, please don't click on any of the links or try replying to the sender.

If you've accidentally clicked on a link contained in the email, then don't supply any of the information that's being asked and if the email has an attachment, don't be tempted to open it.

If you think you've submitted email username or password information as a result of a phishing scam, then please urgently change your password to protect your email service. Please contact us if subsequent issues occur, so we can act quickly to protect you and your business.

Thanks to vigilant customers we're able to react quickly and close down loop holes that allow the less scrupulous to try and trick people into parting with sensitive information.

I still get pop up messages from BT which ask me to confirm my log in details. Without inputting my password I am unable to access my e-mail account.
Perhaps such pop ups should be removed to prevent confusion.
