Is it the end of voicemail?
Posted 10 July 2008 at 10:59AM by Hannah Gilchrist in Email and communications
The theory behind voicemail is all very well and good if you've got hours to sit down, listen and note every important detail. But it's major downfall has to be that many people can't be bothered to listen to a message once let alone twice if you didn't quite catch the phone number the first time.
Many people have totally done away with actually calling people altogether. It's never been easier to translate an important piece of information into an email or text and some are quite open about the fact that they screen their calls before answering anyway.
So is there life after the beep? Possibly not. I for one always resist the temptation to leave a message. There's no sense of immediacy or even urgency about it, if they can see you've called, once, twice or even 10 times they will get back to you when they're ready. Email, surely, is the way to go.

Voice mail is as important today, than any other peice of technology, wither it be the e-mail, text or hand written letter. Sometimes, things need to be said, have that human touch, rather than an e-mail or text. Some people find the latter rather impersonal, or rude when discussing important things.
People can read e-mails and texts but not listen to voice mails, so there is a slightly added security there.
I for one leave voice mail messages to folkes when need be, I also don't mind recieving them either.
Keep the voice mail!

What about voicemail forwarding to email, Hannah? Of course I assume you're leading up to this great BT service offering?
Anyway, I've tried it and it works great. You miss a call, can't be bothered with all the palaver of retriving it, so just have it automatically forwarded to email which is easy to read and offers the phone number to reply.

Not to mention, some of us still pay to listen to our voicemails when we receive them on our mobile phones. Reading texts is free. It is entirely possible to be polite and professional in a text message, it's just that far too many people aren't. That, however, is the fault of the individual, not the service.
Phone call, if no response, text message. That allows people to call back at an urgency dictated by the text message without the hassle of having to listen to a recording of people fumbling for words.

Voice mail is a pain in the backside, especially when BT engineers leave voice messages instead of talking to you face to face and asking you if the fault has been fixed at your end - often it has NOT been fixed and you have to report the fault all over again. Waste of time and effort. VOICE MAIL is a pure COP OUT.

I am one to agree, E-mail is the way to go but I believe that voicemail will be around for some time to come, but is that going far enough, Technologies such as office anywhere and system management tool such as BCM allow for voice messages to be sent directly to your E-mail address in a wave file {Audio file}. Using your Office Anywhere Mobile you will have full access to your emails as well as be able to play back missed call over the mobile or motor vehicle audio systems.
Perfect for you're out of office sales rep or people on the move. We are in the age of communication and the technologies are there, the question is do you know how to optimize it. Call Me @ our BT Local Business Lincoln 01522 81 4400

Peter - I use http://www.spinvox.com/ which costs £5 a month and converts voicemail to texts, which are sent to your phone (there might be an email option as well). Works really well, although it struggles a bit with friends' nicknames! You can still listen to the message if you want.
