Are you using VoIP yet?

Posted 13 July 2007 at 10:18AM by David Crowther in Email and communications

Did you know that BT's Business VoIP service, aka BT Business Broadband Voice, is free if you have BT Business Total Broadband and a BT Business telephone line? Well it is and after listening to your feedback, the product bods at BT have just made it better with these two cool enhancements...

Geographic numbers
Standard Broadband Voice numbers start with 05 rather than the usual area code (like 01603 for Norwich for example). This is okay if you just want to use your VoIP line for dialling out, but perhaps not so great if you want to advertise your VoIP number.

For a small monthly fee per number you can have the power to decide what area code your VoIP number has attached to it. You might be based in a small rural area but could select a number for a large city like 0131 for Edinburgh. Alternatively you might be based in the city but want to appear more local to your rural customer base. Or you could even have both. You decide.

Make and receive calls from your PC
Now you are no longer tied to a real phone to make and receive calls. Just download BT Office Communicator - a free software application which lets you access your Broadband Voice line on your PC.

Once installed, your PC becomes a multi-featured phone and using a handset, or headset with microphone, you can make and receive voice calls on your Broadband Voice service anywhere you have broadband internet access. Add a web cam and you can even make video calls.

When you're abroad you can use your 'virtual phone' on your PC to make and receive calls on your VoIP number just like you were in the office. And it's cheaper too as you and the people calling you will continue to pay the standard VoIP rates regardless of where you are.

So there really is no excuse not phoning your mother now!

Ok thats great Phone on the PC but with downloads only for Windows what about us Linux users ??. More and more will go over to Linux as time goes by . I understand Dell are to market a Linux PC and they are a big supplier to business.

Sorry Mike, no Linux version is planned at this point in time.
