Work from home and help the environment

Posted 30 October 2006 at 2:09PM by Derek Hemphill in Doing business online

Now the clocks have gone back and the nights drawing in, after a glorious summer we now find ourselves in the darker months of the year. The thought of travelling to work in the cold, damp winter mornings is relished by few.

Like many other regular home-workers, I find the need to travel to the office is diminishing as more people are conducting business using broadband and internet technology. According to an article on Silicon.com, The RAC Foundation is encouraging more businesses to adopt smarter working practices in a drive to reduce CO2 levels, cut congestion on our roads and save businesses money.

The article states that according to RAC Foundation research, half of all workers in the UK are not dependant on location to do their job. It also claims that C02 emissions could be reduced by one per cent if we were to leave the car at home just one day per week.

But it's not just broadband and the internet that now makes home working a credible alternative. The rise in popularity of online community and collaboration tools such as blogs, forums and wiki's makes the sharing of information within the virtual workplace much easier.

BT have a number of flexible-working solutions that can help you reduce the time spent in the office. BT Workspace for example lets you share files and collaborate on projects with colleagues wherever you are, and BT Teleworker helps you create a Virtual Private Network between your home, office and other remote workers.

You can fnd out more about flexible working at BT business club.

Sharing information is great, sharing the unique elements of your work life with other homeworkers/shedworkers is also very important, especially in dealing with isolation, etc. For a free issue of The Shed, a bimonthly lifestyle magazine for anybody who works in sheds or shedlike atmospheres, you can email me at alex@splashmedia.co.uk. Or take a look at http://shedworking.blogspot.com which is the first daily updated site devoted to homeworkers in the UK.
