What is a dotmobi domain and should I purchase one?

Posted 28 September 2006 at 8:00AM by Martin Faux in Doing business online

According to an article I read on the BBC website, the mobile web is about to receive its biggest change in years, with the launch of .mobi (dotmobi) domains that can be assigned to sites designed specifically for mobile devices.

Since I was in the same office as Carl di Cicco, the BT Business domain name product manager, I decided to find out whether small businesses should purchase a dotmobi domain.

According to Carl one of the key reasons for purchasing a dotmobi domain name is to protect the company identity. He explained that if you don't own domains with .mobi, .eu, .org, .co.uk, .com .org.uk, then it is possible a competitor may purchase a domain with your company name. Once purchased that competitor is able to set-up email addresses with your company name and carryout email and marketing communications that appear to be from you.

Carl also explained that even if you don't currently have a website that has been designed for mobile devices, by registering for a dotmobi domain you keep your options open for the future.

Having discussed why a company should have a dotmobi domain, I asked Carl when he plans to allow their purchase from this site. He said that he will make them available early in the new year.
