UK leads the world in online video

Posted 22 June 2007 at 10:00AM by Simon Dickson in Doing business online

Where does YouTube fit into your marketing strategy? The launch of a UK homepage for the global video-sharing site makes it much easier to find material from UK producers, and there are predictions that YouTube is about to become more popular than the BBC. To put that in context: the BBC has been rated the no1 'entertainment' website every week for the last two years, and is growing at a more than respectable 13% per year. It's just that YouTube is getting bigger faster.

We've talked here before about the bloke with the blender. Now there are examples even closer to home, with one particularly high-profile jobseeker suddenly putting a lot of video material up in his YouTube area. The BBC is starting to post a lot of clips, trailers and 'DVD extra'-style material.

And it's only going to get bigger. It's been claimed this week that the UK leads the world in online video viewing, with more people watching considerably more video streams than the US, France and Germany. They reckon Brits spend 10% of their online time watching videos, ahead of the Americans and Germans, but a little behind the French. Unsurprisingly, Google properties (including YouTube) dominate the market, accounting for 38% of the video streams watched in the UK.
