The power of collective knowledge

Collective knowledge is a concept that has been around almost as long as human brains have been capable of storing information. But in terms of the Internet, I think we have only scratched the surface of the true potential this methodology can offer.
Wikipedia, the online encyclopaedia, is one example of online collective knowledge where it relies on its users to contribute content and keep it accurate and up-to-date. With millions of contributors and editors around the world, wikipedia has quickly become one of the most useful sites on the planet.
With the rapid growth in social networking sites, blogs, photo sharing and any other web 2.0 type sites, collective knowledge is becoming one of the most sought after commodities on the web.
But what does all this mean for the business user?
Something I've been pondering recently is the possibility of each visitor to this site being able to share and draw on the knowledge and experience of fellow visitors. With several hundred thousand years of collective knowledge, it's a fairly powerful concept.
