Study reveals UK's top e-commerce sites

Posted 5 June 2007 at 10:41AM by Simon Dickson in Doing business online

The latest 'top 50' of UK e-commerce destinations makes for interesting reading. Amazon remains dominant, with the UK site top for UK visitors and (remarkably) the US site fifth, although Tesco has risen steadily up the rankings to claim second place. Argos sits third, with Play.com in fourth. Names from the world of travel and technology dominate, but there are some notable exceptions - with Marks & Spencer, Next, B&Q and QVC doing especially well. But looking down the whole list, it's interesting to note a 50-50 split between 'online-only' and 'real-world' operators.

James Roper of the Interactive Media In Retail Group said he had been surprised at the extent to which the rankings, published quarterly, had consolidated: 19 of the 50 companies were at the same ranking position as a year ago, or a single position up or down. 'The leading e-retailers are doing a great job in attracting and satisfying their share of customers in this fast growing, highly competitive marketplace,' he said. 'They are in great shape to continue to take the lion's share of the online shopping trade. But this industry is always full of surprises, so it will be fascinating to see how consumers vote with their traffic for the top retailers during the year ahead, especially as the international market opens up.'
