Stop travelling and start sharing

Posted 27 May 2008 at 8:30AM by Sara Brown in Doing business online

Once upon a time, the only way in which you could get the most from your sales prospects and customers was to get in the car and travel to see them. Yes, you could have made a telephone call but the impact was so low it probably wasn't worth the effort. How times have changed. Web conferencing and collaboration (sharing) tools are now becoming the norm and they are so easily accessible that the time to start embracing them is now.

The "Go Green" agenda is probably one of the most talked about subjects at the moment and thinking about the way in which we do things helps us to look at alternative methods of doing business and going about our daily lives. It seems right that we try to stop travelling so much, driving miles every day to visit a couple of customers. There must be a better way.

We need to start thinking differently. We share information daily - we talk (many of us too much!), we continually send emails, often with large attachments and we are now embracing the world of business instant messaging. That form of communication is great but now with the adoption of web conferencing, we can make these contacts so much richer and more interactive. Gone are the days when a telephone call is enough or it is worth travelling 100 miles.

Some people think that web conferencing is just a glorified way of sharing a powerpoint presentation and therefore don't realise the full benefits of this technology. Yes, you can share presentations and meet with your colleagues/customers online but there is so much more - pre-meeting registration, polling, recording, archiving and interactive demonstrations are just a few of the things to make your contacts with your colleagues and customers richer and more effective. Enabling your company with this technology is simple, easy and cost effective.

What not try it for yourself, before your commit. It really is that simple!
