Redesign the office online

Is there a more thankless task on the planet than rearranging the office furniture? Everybody wants more space, everybody wants a window, and nobody wants to sit next to you-know-who. In the end, you lose track of which floor plan is the latest draft - and you walk in one Monday morning, to find it all looks a bit different to how you imagined. Surely there's a better way?
A Dutch development agency may have the solution, in the shape of Floorplanner.com. It's a really beautiful Flash-based tool, which brings drag-and-drop simplicity to the process. In next to no time, you can draw out the dimensions of your office, and start positioning furniture and fittings wherever you fancy. Naturally it goes way beyond office layouts, with a huge library of possible objects - and there are all sorts of colour and texture options to choose from. When you're done, you can print your masterpiece, or share it with friends via email.
Base level membership is free, allowing you to design five variations of a single floor; but the site can also scale up to serious business usage. 'Pro' membership levels, which start at £11.50 per month, allow you to publish designs with your own subdomain and look-n-feel. A 3D view is in the works, and there's even a way to use the site offline.
A particular 'well done' to the developers for offering an 'instant in' option on their website: the 'Try-it' link gives you a room to play with, without even having to register.

Sounds an interesting piece of software to provide a first concept draft and may help very small offices to rough out some ideas and options on paper before attempting the real move or before putting to an office space planner or designer.
Having project managed office moves from 10-500 desks I know things rarely go exactly smoothly so its useful to build in contingencies. We all need to be aware too that there are recommended spacings, distances, gaps, heights etc of certain furniture and for staff to create a comfortable and safe office layout for everyone which needs to satisfy fire safety and exit distances. This is too complex to cover here so consider using suitable experts rather than a diy solution to avoid costly problems in the middle of your moves and all the traumas that brings.
