Preparing for the worst

Posted 25 January 2008 at 8:36AM by Ian Betteridge in Doing business online

Just in time for the New Year, various parts of the country are suffering from severe flooding - so bad, in fact, that the Federation of Small Businesses has set up a disaster fund for its members which can offer interest-free loans for companies needing to get back on their feet.

If the scientists are right about global warming, then we're likely to see more warm, wet weather in the UK in Spring and Autumn, leading to floods. And, if some theories are correct, Winters will get a lot colder too - leading to more strain on our already-struggling transport infrastructure. None of this will be good news for business, especially small ones.

Of course, disasters like floods are unavoidable. However, there are ways that you can put plans in place to mitigate the worst effects of natural and other disasters, and ensure that your business has the best possible chance of surviving. No matter how small your business, a business continuity plan should be an essential.

If you're looking to develop a business continuity plan but don't know much about how to go about it, the Cabinet Office's UK Resilience site is a good place to start. You may also wish to talk to your BT Business account manager or BT Local Business to see if there's any way that BT can help you with improving the resilience of your IT systems and services.
