New poll picks the best of 'web 2.0'

Posted 20 June 2007 at 8:49AM by Simon Dickson in Doing business online

Online publisher CNET has revealed the 100 'webware' services and applications which its readers felt were the best of the '2.0' breed. Getting on for half a million votes were cast over 20 days in May and June, picking ten winners in each of ten categories.

Inevitably, Google scores especially well with (if my calculations are right) 13 of its own-branded or acquired services in the top 100; Microsoft, Yahoo and eBay also do pretty well, with a good handful of their products making the cut. To be honest, most of the list writes itself - so you won't be the slightest bit surprised to see Amazon, Wikipedia, MySpace, Facebook, WordPress, Firefox, and so on.

But in a list like this, it's often most interesting to pick out the sites you don't already know. Among those you may not have seen are yourminis, which lets you create 'mashup' pages to share with others (such as this example for Madonna fans); Meebo, which turns your browser into an instant messaging application; Stardoll, which lets you dress celebrities (or before that, to see them in their pants); or the insanely addictive Desktop Tower Defense game. The Webware site gives a short explanation of what each site does, but as ever, the best way to learn is simply to wade in.
