More than just the smoking ban

The English smoking ban isn't the only new piece of business-related legislation coming into force on Sunday. Food and food supplement manufacturers will face new restrictions over the claims they can make about a product's health benefits. For example, you can only call something 'low fat' if it meets the official definition of the term - if you're interested, that's 3g of fat per 100g or 1.5g per 100ml. Similarly, you'll only be able to make claims about specific health benefits of your products if those claims can be suitably backed up.
The best way to keep up with the new legislation - and with a new man in Downing Street, there could be plenty of new legislation on the way - is with the government's Business Link website. Their page of regulation updates provides brief, plain-English summaries of any new rules, and when they come into force. You also have the option of signing up to receive free email alerts about new legislation which might affect your business.
If you aren't a regular visitor to the Business Link website, it's well worth getting to know it. There are significant efforts going on within government to cut the number of websites from an estimated two and a half thousand, down to just a handful. Under the terms of the new rationalisation programme, any information intended for businesses should go on the Business Link website. Not only should this make it all easier to find, but it should result in wider use of the various interactive tools on the Business Link site by all publishers.
