How will October's law changes affect your business?
Posted 19 September 2007 at 10:18AM by Martin Faux in Doing business online
As Simon mentioned in "Ready for next month's law changes" the minimum wage and holiday entitlements are about to change.
The adult hourly rate (age 22 and over) of £5.35 increases to £5.52.
The 18 - 21 year rate of £4.45 increases to £4.60.
The 16 - 17 year rate of £3.30 increases to £3.40.
What about the new holiday entitlement?
Minimum holiday entitlement increases from 20 days to 24 days, inclusive of bank holidays.
In addition to these changes there have also been a few developments in the flexible working law over the last few months.
An employee can apply for flexible working if they've continuously worked for their employer for 26 weeks and have a child under six or a disabled child under 18.
The scope for eligibility of this has recently been extended from parent, guardian or a foster parent to include caring for a spouse, partner, civil partner or relative who lives at the same address.
From 1 October, private foster carers and people with residence orders will be able to ask for flexible working. The definition of adopter also expands to include overseas adoptions and adoptions by relatives
Did you know that St Andrew's Day is now Scotland's ninth bank holiday! The bank holiday received Royal Assent on 15th January 2007 and will come into effect on 30th November 2007.
The St Andrew's Day bill does not give an automatic right to an additional day's holiday; it seeks to improve the celebrations of St Andrew's Day. Employers are not obliged to pay an employee if they take the day off. However, the employee is entitled to substitute the benefit from one of their other standard bank holidays instead.
So there you have it!

I have a small business with less than 25 people, but these new law changes will mean that I could have increased costs.
Like most small businesses changes that affect our cashflow can be difficult to cover and sometimes predict.
