Future of businesses in the hands of London Mayor

Posted 30 April 2008 at 3:31PM by Ian Betteridge in Doing business online

Want to affect the future of business? Then get out and vote in the London Mayoral elections. According to the Federation of Small Businesses, London's new mayor will determine a large portion of the city's economic development.

Nick Winch, FSB's London Policy Manager cited the current uncertain economic climate for the shift towards increasing mayoral influence over firms. Winch addressed the as-yet unelected mayor directly, encouraging the removal of existing obstacles to small businesses to minimise the impact of the credit crunch and help businesses back on their feet.

"There's a crucial role of facilitating growth and creating a climate where businesses can grow and create new jobs and also where new businesses can come along as well," he said.

Prime candidates for the coveted mayoral title include Boris Johnson representing the Conservatives, current mayor and Labour representative Ken Livingstone and former police chief Brian Paddick for the Liberal Democrats, with results declarations to take place at City Hall this coming Friday.

What the ?? The majority of BT readers don't live in London and don't have a vote for tha mayoral election. It really annoys me when so called national services such as this one assume that life stops and starts in London !

I disagree strongly with Ms Mayman-Guest. Whether or not you are based in London the result of the Mayoral Election will effect you on many fronts

It may affect me, but as those living outside London naturally have no vote in the capital's mayoral election, there is no point in a weblog telling us all to go out vote. The majority of us can't or are weblogs not meant to be read by us "provincials"!

Whether it affects you or not, it's a bit tricky to follow the advice above when you don't live there.

Who is this Livingstone person, somebody in London I presume. Just a speck on the the map of the UK.

Nobody is featuring all the others who live outside London and are up for election.

Once again the Midlands, The North, Wales and Scotland are forgotten.
