Fancy yourself as the next Roman Abramovich?

In these few blessed weeks between football seasons, most people's attention turns to the buying and selling of players - or indeed, clubs. English football is big business, attracting huge levels of investment from all over the world. And in the 'web 2.0' spirit, a community of football fans is getting remarkably close to joining the Glazers and Abramoviches.

My Football Club Ltd is planning to buy an English football club, and get it into the Premiership within 'five or so years'. They reckon they can do this by asking 50,000 fans to pay £35 a season, and they're within sight of their goal, having attracted over 10,000 supporters during June, bringing their total to almost 43,000 by the start of July.

In return for your £35, you get to play 'fantasy football' - for real. All major decisions will be put to the shareholders, who will vote online. Can 50,000 people reach sensible decisions? 'With so many people voting, and full and proper discussions taking place in relation to each vote, we think that it's actually more likely that a correct and unbiased decision will be made,' say the organisers. The initiative now has the backing of computer games company EA Sports, who have committed to making 'a significant investment', details of which will be disclosed when the selected club is purchased.

It isn't going to make you as rich as Abramovich, and I doubt it will even get you an invite into the boardroom. But if it gives you a warm glow to think that you're involved in calling the shots, £35 a year seems a small price to pay.
