Choosing your company web address name

Posted 14 January 2008 at 8:28AM by Hannah Gilchrist in Doing business online

If you thought picking a name for your business was hard, try replicating that name for a web address. What can seem like a productive morning on a domain name site will soon turn to dust when every name you try is taken. So where should you start?

Firstly it's important to remember that it isn't about people finding your site for the first time, it's about those return visitors who can't quite remember if it was brandneweastereggs.com or bnee.com?

The first rule is, don't be too cryptic. It's always annoying when you're looking for a website and it turns out the domain name isn't the full business name but an abbreviation. Customers are far more likely to remember the full name of your business rather than an obscure three letters and a dash. And don't worry about the length, domain names can now be up to 67 characters long.

So before you spend hours trawling through domain name sites, draw up a list of possibilities and don't forget your spelling.

It's especially downheartening when you think of the perfect most excellent name for a domain, only to find it's not only taken, but by someone in the same line of business as you!
