Business trip safety

Posted 23 July 2008 at 8:30AM by Hannah Gilchrist in Doing business online

It's one thing to remember your passport and laptop when travelling abroad for work purposes, but what other preparations should you and your colleagues do to make sure everything runs smoothly?

Travelling alone to foreign countries on business can lead many of us to forget basic rules of safety. But don't fall into the trap of taking risks. Every move from boarding the plane to travelling to and from meetings is the responsibility of your employer. Despite new legislation on corporate responsibility, many firms are still failing to protect their employees when they leave home soil. So if you're travelling for the first time what should you remember?

1 - Check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) warnings on the place you are visiting. This will help you plan for every eventuality and find out ways to avoid potential problems.

2 - Buy a guide-book. When travelling to a foreign country on business you might not be looking for a sightseeing tour, but reading a book about customs and traditions may help you get out of a few awkward situations, like refusing dinner invitations or buying drinks.

3 - Talk to colleagues and friends about where you're going. There are always a few snippets of information the guide-books won't tell you like how to haggle a cheap taxi or helpful safety information.
