BT Workspace takes a huge leap forward

Posted 31 August 2007 at 10:21AM by Simon Dickson in Doing business online

Our mates over at BT Workspace have just unveiled version three of their online project management tool, and it's looking better than ever. The new interface is being rolled out gradually to existing workspacers - but if you're registering for the first time, you'll get the improved experience from day one. And since the 'lite' service is still completely free, what more excuse do you need?

If you haven't come across it before, BT Workspace is a web-based way to share files and information among project teams: within one company, or perhaps more usefully, with your clients, suppliers and external partners. Our last version wasn't exactly lacking in features, but the new release takes things to a whole new level.

BT Workspace

First off, it looks fantastic. Lots of 'web 2.0' styling, big friendly icons, and a big space for your company logo. We're not saying the old one was ugly, but - er, you know how it is. When you log in, you see a calendar with all the events relevant to you; any tasks assigned to you; and a Facebook-style 'news feed' of all the latest changes on your projects. It's an instant view of all the stuff you'll need to know, with all the detail just a click away. And if you can't be bothered checking the website, you can have it all emailed to you on a daily basis.

But it's not just a visual makeover. There's now a built-in 'instant messaging' tool, letting you have real-time chats with project colleagues - with the added benefit of being able to see, at any given time, who's logged in. And there's a whole new 'company contacts' area, giving you a shared address book, plus CRM-style functionality for tracking sales leads and contracts. With a few other tweaks and enhancements thrown in, including better integration with Windows and Microsoft Office, it's a huge leap forward for the service.

BT Workspace Lite is still free to start with: you get two workspaces, 10MB of storage, and as many users as you like. Give it a try; it could revolutionise the way you work. If you decide you want more workspaces and more storage, you're looking at a monthly fee of £15-50 ex VAT.

Functionality - Don't you mean Capability? A much better word and not one that smacks of laziness and poor dictionary skills...

Doesn't capability mean it's possible to do it but it's not a specifically implemented feature, where as functionality means the 'function' for running CRM-style sales tracking is already there? Ironic comment Mr Dawson. It's the difference between HD capable and HD ready televisions. HD capable means it can do it, but not out of the box, where as a HD ready TV has HD functionality from the get go.

BT Tradespace is slowly becoming that 'must have' tool.
