BT SaaS boosted with NetSuite

Posted 24 April 2008 at 2:14PM by Hannah Gilchrist in Doing business online

Software as a Service (SaaS) packages are no longer just for the big boys, BT are teaming up with NetSuite to offer the web-based service to all their smaller business customers too.

Adopting these applications, alongside NetSuite's other business management tools, has long been on the wish list for the more advanced smaller firms. Its versatility as a system that can be used for resource planning, CRM or ecommerce is perfect for businesses not looking to shell out for high-end technology. But as some of the UK's smaller firms latch onto the SaaS revolution, will it be so great for everyone?

Every business is different and that's why many small to medium sized businesses have often shied away from web-based on-demand software. Some hate the lack of control, while others fear their business security. But whilst these tech-a-phobes are burying their heads in the sand, surely SaaS has to be seen as the future?

How can using the technology you need without having to pay for the software up front sound like a bad thing? If you need to change your software it doesn't mean splashing more cash to find the perfect fit, just a monthly subscription charge.

So should all small businesses bite the bullet and sign up or still proceed with caution?

YES - YES Still proceed with caution. The problem with specialist software is that you do not know if it is going to work untill at the hard work and expense has finisted. If necessary try small bites at a time.

Ahoy James,
the very idea of software as a service is to allow us to take small bites at a time. This would enable small business users to pay for what they use and not shell out huge amounts for shrink wrapped weightless DVD packets.
would you pay few pounds a month for the applications that you use or the entire bundle costing the earth ? mmm much debate is called for here.

Isn't this why we have trail periods for software? You usually have 30 days or more to determine if a software is right for you before purchasing. That's 30 FREE days, not paid rental. And when it comes to upgrading, if you have the full original version, an upgrade costs a fraction of the price.
