Be prepared for carbon tax rises

Posted 20 March 2007 at 10:20AM by Simon Dickson in Doing business online

With both Gordon Brown and David Cameron making pledges on reducing carbon emissions, and using the tax system to do so, it's worth thinking about the position of your own business.

A good starting point is BT's new 'carbon calculator', which lets you total up the carbon impact of your energy usage and travel. Once you've worked out your current figure, you can look through BT's tips on smarter travel, purchasing and practices for advice. The site promises further enhancements over time, including a forum, online game and wiki.

There's also the Carbon Trust, an organisation independent of business and government, whose aim is to help organisations reduce their carbon emissions, and develop commercial low-carbon technologies. If your business has an energy bill over £50,000 per year, they will provide a free survey to identify energy-saving opportunities; smaller firms can speak to their freephone advice line.

The Trust's website has quite a range of leaflets and brochures to download, as well as a few interactive tools to build up a personalised picture. You will have to register to access most of the good stuff, but there's no charge. Since it's all about your energy usage and spending, be sure to dig out a few recent utility bills.
