How to offer your customers a Wi-Fi hotspot

Posted 7 December 2006 at 4:16PM by Alexa Williamson in Connecting to the Internet

Now that you know how to access Wi-Fi from a public hotspot, as a follow-up to yesterday's post, I'm pleased to inform you that it's also exceptionally easy to set up one and make your business that little bit better than a competitor.

How do you set up a public hotspot at your business? Thankfully, it's straightforward and doesn't require a lot of effort or maintenance. With BT Openzone in-a-Box, for example, all you have to do is plug in the 'Box' (the wireless router) to a second ethernet port on a broadband-enabled computer and your customers will be able to connect to the Internet on your premises.

BT Openzone in-a-Box will also pay itself off as it comes with vouchers (free to you) that you can sell to customers who want to buy 'online time' from you (similar to buying time at an Internet café). Alternatively, customers who already have a Wi-Fi access account with BT Openzone or other providers can still use the BT Openzone hot spot.

Providing Wi-Fi access to customers equates to added value and better customer satisfaction without much effort. But the proof is in actual results. For example, Hilton hotels in the UK use BT Openzone and report that customers are using 80,000 minutes among all their hotels every week. This is an increase from the mere 8,000 minutes usage per month that they were receiving 18 months ago.

Not a bad result for installing a small piece of kit that has the potential to earn you money.
