"Blogs are better than press releases"

Posted 5 March 2008 at 1:31PM by Ian Betteridge in Business blogging

We've talked plenty of times before about the effectiveness of blogs, particularly for smaller businesses. But this quote was just too good to ignore.

Over on the Ogilvy PR blog, Rohit Bhargava is brave-enough to say something that I never thought I'd see from a PR man: that "blogs are better than press releases".

You might think there's a bit of an element of "they would say that, wouldn't they?" After all, Ogilvy is saying this in a blog post - and you'd presume that the person posting is pretty pro-blog. But there's also a very simple and fundamental point made: that "a press release is just a tool. A blog is an ongoing platform."

This is especially true for small businesses, which thrive on contact with their customers. Put up a post that your customers disagree with, and (as we know from posts here) they'll soon tell you all about it.

Some companies might be resistant to that - but if a customer is willing to take the time and make the effort to comment on what you're doing, you should be listening.

If you'd like to set-up a blog for your business, then get yourself a Tradespace.
