Simon bows out
Posted 20 November 2007 at 8:33AM by Simon Dickson in Announcements
Well team, the time has come to write my final piece for the BT blog, and bow out gracefully. Over the last eight months, and well over two hundred posts, I think I've passed on every trick I know; and now it's time for me to sit back, and learn from someone else's expertise.
As it happens, I think we'll look back on this as an important period in the development of the web, and the IT business more generally. Facebook came out of nowhere, to become a national obsession. Linux is becoming a realistic choice for the desktop. Apple unveiled the iPhone, and just as importantly, the iPod Touch. And all the while, web 2.0 stopped being a hype, and became a reality.
Things haven't been quiet around BT, either. We've had the launch of Tradespace, and the 'free wifi worldwide' deal with FON, both of which have huge potential. So many questions, so few answers... which is precisely why I love this business.
To all the regular commenters - among them Kim, Anjanesh and the legendary Patrick Coach - my thanks. And to everyone, you're more than welcome to join me over at my own blog, www.simondickson.co.uk, where I describe my area of particular professional activity - namely, web publishing strategies for the public sector, news business and a few large corporate clients. But if you've been reading this blog closely, you probably know what I'm going to say before I say it!

Best wishes for your future, however, let's hope that whoever takes over will be more business orientated and that the emphasis will move more to improving business activities and business information systems etc with less encouragement given to employees to waste their employer's valuable working hours for which they are paid to work. This Country needs to improve its business efficiency and small businesses need all the support and help that they can get. So, BT, let have some real business help, advice and assistance rather than trivia.

Well .... sounds to me that most businesses would be better off encouraging their employees to be engaged with customers and suppliers online and elsewhere (even if it is part trivia) rather than thinking solutions only arise from reliance on non-human 'systems'....
Looking forward to being involved and even contributing to a wide range of topics on this blog in future.

Will be truly sorry to see you go Simon - despite all the mutual differences with bloggers here you did manage to tread the careful patch between technical views and BT. If there was truly an example for business blogging - this is it.
Contrary to what may be expressed here ; your threads and comments did make a lot of difference to many and improved technical knowledge that we can apply in our daily life. Most important of all it brought like minded (and different)people under one forum . Nevertheless ; we do hope that you will continue to contribute your comments in this blog and will look forward to following your career on your website.
we wish you the very best Simon.

Good luck and all but i agree with James, sometimes its not as much orientated towards the general business user.
Maybe step AWAY from facebook. its almost obsessive.
Maybe more focus on new free/share ware products that can help the business move forward?
Too many things mentioned that BT customers cant take full advantages of due to service limitations (traffic shaping in particular)

i for one like to take a break for organising events to read a little about non work related subjects. it soothes the soul. anyone who needs business help and advice really shouldnt be referring to a blog for it, they should be seeking professional help. good advice doesnt come free.
keep it coming with the interesting articles

Damn, now how am I gonna skive off work. Your blogs were the only interesting thing to read while the boss was out, now I've got to start doing "work" again. Alas, I hope your successor to the blogging throne can do the job half as well as you can, or I may just end up exploding.
Good luck Simon, your top notch blogs will be sorely missed.

I agree with Mr Momahon full heartedly. People cannot rely on a blog for assistance in running their business'. They should be seeking assistance elsewhere. This blog has and always will be a source of information that we can disect to meet individual needs in business. Great job Simon, Best of luck.

QUOTE "Simon Dickson.
Says - I run Puffbox, a consultancy that does web stuff for news, government and big corporates."NO WONDER simon's blog was big company based.
Small companies do not have time to allow employees to waste their employers time roaming around websites and facebook etc in their employers time. Time is important to the small company and cannot be wasted.
Come on BT, lets have more concentration on helping the small company. Todays small companies , will, if they are efficient, become the medium and to large companies of tomorrow.
Facebook etc can be an utter waste of time during business hours !! ??

I'm disappointed to hear you are going, Simon. Since you joined, I've been an avid and frequent reader of the Business Blog. It's good for business people to keep up-to-date with what's going on in the world of technology. With their busy lives they don't always have time to see the bigger picture, e.g. how advertising on Facebook could be good for business; how shared documents on Google Docs provide an alternative to cumbersome file attachments.
Always with the correct business bias, your posts are well-written, informative and interesting to read. Thanks, and good luck in your next role!
Regards,
Matt (Online Support Editor, BT Business)

Once again it pains me to see how people neglect to see the huge advertising potential that facebook has.
Small and Medium business' should use this as it is a brillaint tool to get your company recognised no matter how big or small.
Im not saying their employees should spend all their time on it, but rather pay a little attention to it from time to time.Simon, no matter what these fellow bloggers write, as they are entitled to their opinion, your blog is always gonna have a five star rating in my, and many others, books.
Take Care

small companies will become big companies if the product or service they sell take off, what advice can you really give a toyshop owner to help him become multi-national. to be large you need to fill the niche first

Reading your blog has been a highlight of our working day for some time now. Although I often find some of the comments to be incessant ramblings, but what more can you expect from people who want something for nothing. Hopefully your predecessor will inspire some of the more creative posters such as Patrick Coach as much as you did.
