About time bt started giving things away for free!
Does this mean it might be easier to raise a fault?

That's Not the Broadband number - that's the PSTN faults number - the broadband number is 0845 600 7020! and it's NOT free!

way to go ! this takes away a major hassle concerned with BB suppport . A huge step for BT and for the service industry as such.It is criminal injustice for all service providers to use a 0845 or 870 number to fleece customers ('non-geographic' number thingy) when callers can very well call a local number or toll free .Why does everyone provide a 0800 number for Sales and an 0845 /0870 number for support /aftersales ? No other country in the world does this , only banks, utitlies and generally anyone who wants to mint money from customer woes uses 0845/0870 numbers in th UK.If you query 'BT 0870 ' on BT website you will find out the actual revenue sharing arrangements with service provider. Certainly it is time for us as customers to realise that. Congratulations to BT for having shown the way for all the others. Now it is upto the various banks, utilities and other broadband service providers to follow BT.

What? No more wading through the site and finding that daft character asking me questions and finally finding your number. Will there be any left in life?

I will keep this number close to my heart.

In response to Pauls comment, we now have a single helpdesk to provide technical help for telephone line and broadband faults.

So it is one number to remember and it's FREE.

Well, I have to say it's about time that some support team did this.

Good job BT!

In response to Anjanesh, it gets worse.

Virgin Media recently introduced an 0906 number as their primary broadband technical support line. 10p connection charge + 25p a minute from a Virgin Media landline, and guess what? The launch of this new fantastic support number coincided with a spate of connection problems for me. Oh the joy of paying £5 to be told "We're working on it, give it 48 hours and try again".

I despair.

Martin from BT,

Have you actually tried contacting the broadband support team using the "single helpdesk" number?

If you try calling 0800 800 154 you will find you have to go through several menu options and when you select the option for "broadband support" a recorded message tells you to call the 0845 number. I've raised this issue several times with BT including High Level Complaints, needless to say, without success.

In all honesty, an 0845 number is local rate is it not? Ie between 1 and 3 pence per minute? In comparison to the vaious other providers giving 0870, 0891 and sometimes only email response, I feel that BT was already letting us off lightly with a local rate number! Plus, with other desks using 0800 numbers, there's always the oppertunity to be "passed through" from them..

This is in response to Derek, I managed to get round this for my home BB by actually going down to the virgin shop and complaining there, the clerk phoned up for me and I managed to get everything sorted without having to pay for the call.

Still, it took about 50 minutes, 4 cold transfers and me shouting at them a lot for them to sort it out.

response to Derek Trotter : sorry to hear about your experience on Virgin Media. I spend £80 calling from my mobile during a whole day and still the problem was unresolved ( it was to cancel the connection) . Raised the hell with them - show all my call records and got 40 quid refunded. Have another ace up the sleeve for such issues - a direct access local number to complaints at Virgin. Sad , never had any technical issues with Virgin- only problems being dealing with their support for any query.Derek , if you need any help contact me for cutting through red tape.Cheers !

Well i just phoned this number and only offers me PSTN yet i have business broadband?
It has way to many menu's though.
Sadly virgin decided to do a BT approach (For residential anyway) and outsource to india. In my personal opinon this should be banned by UK Law.
Its difficult enough to get people to speak to here who understand your problem.
Helpdesks should be free but then again BT get a cut of the money for setting up those numbers

maybe you could also reduce your isp charges a bit as they arent too competitive now

I just tried the number, got through to a woman who told me to call 0845 6007020 as they only deal with phone lines on the 0800 number !!! Suggest BT get their act together.

Well I hope this is an improvement on recent performance - last time I called the help desk I spent 2.5 hours on the 'phone - whilst BT tried to fix my machine - when in the event, broadband itself wasn't working - A big improvement might be a link between the technical help desk and broadband engineers...

tried this number,it is not the technical helpline, derected to a 0845 number so its not free !!!!

Thank you for raising the issue of still being routed to an 0845 number. Having investigated this, the root cause has been identified and has been found to affect a small number of customers. We are working hard on getting this problem fixed. We would appreciate it if you could bear with us. We will keep you posted on progress.
