BT and Microsoft encourage 'mash-ups'

Posted 20 February 2007 at 10:01AM by Alexa Williamson in Announcements

Following my posts on BT Beta.com, Tradespace and our call for participants to trial an undisclosed product, I hope we've proved that one of our aims is always to 'roll out' the best new products and services possible. Our latest way of doing this is to team up with Microsoft to present the Connected Services Sandbox Competitions.

What is this?

It's a series of competitions designed to promote the innovation of customer solutions (ie 'mash-ups') that merge traditional telecommunications offerings such as voice or text messaging with Web 2.0 applications such as mapping or search. Freelance developers (and Sandbox registered organisations) are encouraged to enter and are challenged to make mash-ups for multiple-usage scenarios.

BT Business managing director Bill Murphy sums it up well: "With the Sandbox environment, we have the ability to see new services created and developed from concept to market... for example, we will be looking at services targeted at the small-to-midsize business market, where a unified communications solution can benefit a company with one to ten employees."

For more information on how developers can enter and what types of mash-ups are being made, visit the Connected Services Sandbox official site.
